How to Play FreeCell 7×4 — Quick Guide

Goal:
Build up each home pile by suit, from A to K (A, 2, 3, …).
Moving Cards:
You can organise the columns by moving cards in descending order and alternating colors (like 5 on 6).
You can move a whole group of cards if they’re in sequence.
Max cards in a group = number of empty free cells + 1. If no cells are free, you can only move one card at a time.
Free cells:
Each free cell can hold one card. Use them to free up space and help with moves.
Empty Columns:
You can start an empty column with any card.

Setting Up the Game

Dealing Out the Tableau

Item 1
In Seven by Four, the Tableau consists of 3 columns with 8 cards each and 4 columns with 7 cards.
Item 2
Stack each card so it only partially covers the one above it.
Item 3
Every card in the Tableau is dealt face-up.

Cells and Foundation Piles

Step 1
Leave room above the Tableau for 4 Cells (on the left) and 4 Foundation Piles (on the right).
Step 2
Arrange the Cells and Foundation Piles in a single row.

How to Win

Your goal is to complete every Foundation Pile. You win when there are no cards left in the Cells and Tableau.

Stacking Cards in the Tableau

Rule 1
Cards in the Tableau can only be stacked in suits of alternating colors. A card with a red suit (Hearts or Diamonds) can only be placed under a card with a black suit (Spades or Clubs), and vice-versa.
Rule 2
A card can only be stacked below a card that is one rank higher. For example, a Jack can only be placed under a Queen.
Rule 3
Empty spaces in the Tableau can be filled by any card.
Rule 4
Stacked cards cannot be moved together unless there is enough room in the Tableau to move each of the cards individually.

Moving Cards In and Out of Cells

Rule 1
Any card at the bottom of a column can be moved to an empty Cell.
Rule 2
A card can be moved out of a Cell at any point in the game, provided there is a suitable place for it (either in the Tableau or on a Foundation Pile).
Rule 3
Cards cannot be stacked in the Cells. Each Cell can only hold one card at a time.

Building Foundation Piles

Rule 1
Start Foundation Piles by moving an Ace to an empty Foundation Pile.
Rule 2
To build a Foundation Pile, add a card that is the same suit and one rank higher than the one at the top of the pile.
Rule 3
For example, if the top card on the pile is a 5 of Diamonds, you can only place the 6 of Diamonds on it.
Rule 4
You can build Foundation Piles using cards from the Tableau or the Cells.
Rule 5
A Foundation Pile is complete when it contains all 13 cards in a single suit in the following order: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King.

Other Rules

Rule 1
Cards cannot be moved out of the Foundation Piles.

Playing FreeCell Seven by Four Solitaire – The Layout

1.The Tableau
Deal 3 columns with 8 cards each then 4 more columns with 7 cards each, with every card face-up and slightly overlapping the one above it.
2.The Cells
Leave 4 spaces above the Tableau for the Cells.
3.The Foundation Piles
Leave 4 more spaces above the Tableau for the Foundation Piles.

The Gameplay

1.Stack Cards in Alternating Colors
Cards in the Tableau can only be stacked under cards that have a different color suit.
2.Sort by Rank
Cards in the Tableau can only be placed under cards that are one rank higher.
3.Store Cards in the Cells
Move cards into the Cells to clear up the Tableau.
4.Use Empty Spaces in the Tableau
Empty spaces in the Tableau can be filled by any card.
5.Build Your Foundation Piles
Build each Foundation Pile by adding cards in order from Ace to King. You win when all the Foundation Piles are complete!

Strategies for Seven by Four FreeCell Solitaire

Seven by Four is FreeCell with one less column. That gives you fewer moves to work with, which makes the game more challenging.

It takes some skill to win at Seven by Four, but with the right strategy you can earn a victory in most rounds:

Locate the Aces
Scan the columns and find the Aces. Look for the ones that are closest to the bottom of the Tableau and try to get to them first.
Use the Cells Strategically
With one less column to work with, you’ll need to use your Cells earlier in the game. Try to avoid crowding them too quickly, though - filling all the Cells severely limits your options.
Put Some of the Aces on the Backburner
Unless they’re near the bottom of the Tableau, you don’t need to go after all the Aces as soon as you can. Once you have one or two Foundation Piles started, it’s often advantageous to work on them and remove cards from the Tableau before you start digging out the remaining Aces.
