How to Play Cheops Pyramid Solitaire

Quick Guide

  • Deck:

Cheops Pyramid Solitaire is played with a single standard deck of 52 cards.

  • Deal Out:

Deal 7 rows of face-up cards in a pyramid shape, with 7 cards at the base and a single card at the top.

  • Objective:

Remove every card from the Tableau, Stockpile, and Wastepile.

  • Discarding:

Eliminate cards by matching them with a card that has the same rank or is one rank above or below. Kings and Aces cannot be paired together.

  • The Challenge:

Cheops gives you plenty of options for pairing cards, but only lets you cycle through the Stockpile once!

  • Difficulty Level:

Cheops is a very difficult variant of Pyramid Solitaire. Getting through the pyramid is fairly easy, but emptying the Wastepile is the tough part!

Setting Up the Game

Dealing Out the Tableau

  • Item 1

Cheops Pyramid Solitaire has a Tableau with 28 cards shaped like a pyramid.

  • Item 2

To make the pyramid, deal a single card for the first row. Then deal two cards in the row below it, with the cards slightly overlapping the one above it. Add one more card to each row and repeat until you’ve dealt out a row with 7 cards.

  • Item 3

Every card in the Tableau is dealt face-up.

Setting Up the Piles

  • Step 1

Put all the remaining cards face-up in a Stockpile above the Tableau.

  • Step 2

Leave a space next to the Stockpile for the Wastepile.

  • Step 3

Finally, designate a space to the side of the Tableau for the Discard pile.

Rules for Playing Relaxed Pyramid Solitaire

How to Win

Your goal is to eliminate every single card from the game. You win when all 52 cards are in the Discard pile.

Eliminating Cards

  • Option 1

Eliminate cards by pairing them together. You can only pair cards that have the same rank or consecutive ranks. For example, a Jack can only be paired with a 10, a Jack, or a Queen. Similarly, a 4 can only be paired with a 3, a 4, or a 5.

  • Option 2

You cannot pair an Ace with a King. Aces can only be paired with Aces or 2’s, while Kings can only be paired with Kings or Queens.

  • Option 3

Suits don’t matter in Cheops Pyramid Solitaire.

  • Option 4

You can only pair cards that are fully exposed. A card cannot be played if another card overlaps it.

Drawing From the Stockpile

  • Rule 1

You can draw from the Stockpile at any point in the game.

  • Rule 2

When you draw a card, place it face-up on top of the Wastepile.

  • Rule 3

You can only play the top card from the Stockpile or the Wastepile.

  • Rule 4

You can only cycle through the Stockpile once.

Other Rules

  • Rule 1

You cannot move cards out of the Discard pile.

  • Rule 2

You cannot add cards back to the pyramid to fill empty spaces in the Tableau.

Strategies for Cheops Pyramid Solitaire

Cheops feels easy at first since you have so many options for pairing cards. But don’t let it fool you - it’s actually an extremely challenging game.

What makes Cheops so tough is the Stockpile. Only being able to cycle through it once means you have to play your cards very carefully or you’ll run out of moves before filling the Discard pile.

Cheops will put you through your paces. But you can improve your odds of winning with these helpful tips:

  • Consider All Your Options:

Cheops gives you plenty of options for pairing cards. But pairing the wrong ones will leave you stuck further down the line. So carefully weigh each option before choosing which cards to send to the Discard pile.

  • Pay Attention to Your Wastepile

It’s tempting to clear cards from the pyramid first, but you only win if the Wastepile is empty too. Pay attention to the cards in the Wastepile and Stockpile — sometimes, it’s better to use those instead of the ones in the Tableau.

  • Take Your Time

There are no second chances in Cheops. Once you cycle through the Stockpile, that’s it — there’s no going back. So take your time and don’t draw too hastily.
