Playing Klondike Solitaire — The Layout
The legendary Renaissance painter Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” This quote predates the birth of Klondike Solitaire by a few centuries but still captures its essence perfectly, down to its layout.
There are four main areas in the Klondike Solitaire layout:
1.The Tableau
The main play area has seven columns, with the first containing one card, the second card containing two cards, the third containing three cards, and so on, with the seventh column containing seven cards. Only the topmost card of each column is face-up.
2.The Stockpile
The Stockpile consists of the remaining 24 cards in the deck. How many cards you draw from it depends on the variant of Klondike Solitaire you’re playing. In the Turn-1 version, each draw reveals one card, while the Turn-3 version shows three cards at once. In Turn-3, only the top card of the three can be used, though you can either play through all three cards in succession or draw a new set from the Stockpile.
3.The Waste Pile
Cards you draw from the Stockpile are placed into the Wastepile. You can use these cards to play on the Tableau or continue drawing from the Stockpile to the Wastepile.
4.The Foundation
There are four Foundation piles that you must build in ascending order for each suit, from Ace to King.

Move with Purpose
1.With a few hours of practice, you can fully grasp the rules that dictate the gameplay of Turn-One Klondike Solitaire. Yet mastery of the game is a completely different story that will come with time and practice.
2.You must start each Foundation pile with an Ace and build it up in ascending order by suit. In other words, you’ll build the Foundation pile containing an Ace of Spades by placing other Spade cards on it in ascending order. Moreover, you build the columns in the Tableau downward in descending order while alternating colors. For example, if you have an 8 of Hearts (a red card), you can only place a 7 of Spades or a 7 of Clubs (both black cards) on it.
3.If you empty a column, you can fill the empty spot with only a King. On the other hand, when you’ve run out of moves in the Tableau columns, you can use the Stockpile to draw one card to help you build the sequences in your Tableau or Foundation piles. You win after placing all the cards into the four Foundation piles or by fully arranging the cards in the Tableau.

Start by Unveiling the Stockpile
Reveal the first card in the Stockpile before making any move. This increases the number of possible actions you can take, setting off your game with a strong start. Unveiling the Stockpile early also maximizes your chances of uncovering helpful cards.
Tableau Cards Hold More Importance
Move a card to the Tableau from the Wastepile whenever possible. This strategy helps you avoid missing out on crucial moves that could uncover new cards. Prioritize Tableau cards to keep the game progressing.
Try to Reveal Hidden Cards from Stacks with More Cards
Prioritize revealing hidden cards from larger stacks in the Tableau — this gives you more cards to play with and keeps you from getting stuck later in the game. Larger stacks often hide valuable cards that facilitate multiple moves. Uncover these cards early to enhance your overall strategy.
Use the Stockpile Wisely
Treat the Stockpile as your greatest asset in the game, but avoid abusing it. Use the Stockpile once you can no longer make any moves in the Tableau. Be judicious with the Stockpile to ensure you always have options available when you’re in a tight spot.
