It\u2019s usually played by <strong>four players<\/strong> with a standard <strong>52-card deck<\/strong>, and it\u2019s best known for one thing: keeping your score low.<\/p>\n\n<p>A quick bit of context: Hearts appeared in the United States around 1880 and likely grew out of older European games like Reversis. The direction rotates by deal:\n<ul>\n<li>Deal 1: Left<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deal 2: Right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deal 3: Across<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deal 4: No passing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then repeat the pattern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>The pass sets the tone for the whole deal: you try to get rid of trouble cards and keep the ones you can play safely.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trick Play Rules (Step-by-Step)<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) The first trick starts with 2\u2663\ufe0f<\/h3>\n\n<p>The opening lead is always <strong>2\u2663\ufe0f<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Follow suit if you can<\/h3>\n\n<p>The first card played sets the <strong>lead suit<\/strong>. Going clockwise, each player must follow that suit if possible. If you don\u2019t have it, you can play any card.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) No hearts or Q<strong>\u2660\ufe0f<\/strong> on the first trick<\/h3>\n\n<p>On the very first trick, you <strong>can\u2019t play a Heart or the Queen of Spades<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Highest card in the lead suit wins the trick<\/h3>\n\n<p>Whoever plays the highest card of the lead suit takes the trick \u2014 and leads the next one.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) \u201cBreaking Hearts\u201d<\/h3>\n\n<p>After the first trick, a player can lead with any card \u2014 <strong>but not Hearts<\/strong> until \u201cHearts are broken.\u201d Hearts are broken when someone plays a Heart on a trick that was led with another suit. After that, Hearts may be led normally.<\/p>\n\n<p>Exception: if you\u2019re stuck holding only Hearts (and the Q\u2660), you may lead them.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shooting the Moon<\/h2>\n\n<p>\u201cShooting the Moon\u201d is the big swing play: if a player takes <strong>all Hearts plus the Q<strong>\u2660\ufe0f<\/strong><\/strong> in a deal, that player scores <strong>0<\/strong>, and every opponent scores <strong>26<\/strong> points.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s rare, risky, and absolutely worth watching for \u2014 even if you never attempt it yourself.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Glossary<\/h2>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lead:<\/strong> The first card played in a trick. This card starts the trick and sets the suit for the trick.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lead suit:<\/strong> The suit of the lead card (the first card played in the trick).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Following suit:<\/strong> Playing a card of the lead suit when you have at least one card of that suit in your hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deal \/ hand:<\/strong> One complete round of play from dealing the cards to scoring the points. In a 4-player game, each deal has 13 tricks (because each player has 13 cards).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breaking hearts:<\/strong> The moment when a Heart is played in a trick that was led with a different suit. After hearts are broken, players are allowed to lead with Hearts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hearts Strategy That Actually Helps<\/h2>\n\n<p>The strategy advice boils down to a clean idea: pick a plan early, then adapt after the pass.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pass high cards<\/h3>\n\n<p>Fewer high cards = fewer \u201caccidental\u201d tricks. The real danger is holding several high cards in a suit that <em>aren\u2019t<\/em> the very top \u2014 you can get trapped taking the leftovers after others dump their highest cards.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a short suit<\/h3>\n\n<p>If you can run out of a suit, you gain control: when that suit is led, you can discard anything (including penalty cards). If you\u2019re doing it deliberately, you can keep one card in that suit for a while so your plan is less obvious.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep an eye on \u201cBlack Maria\u201d<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Q<strong>\u2660\ufe0f<\/strong> is worth 13 points and can flip a deal by itself. Try not to be the person forced to take it. Having a couple of low spades can help you stay safe when spades are led.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interrupt a Shooting the Moon Plan<\/h3>\n\n<p>If someone looks like they\u2019re trying to take every point card, save something that can interrupt it.
